Welcome to Barks & Parks!
As dog walkers, we know that every day is an adventure filled with wagging tails and happy barks. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, we’re here to share some insights that will make your dog walking experience both fun and manageable. Let’s dive into the essentials every dog walker should have on hand, how to handle multiple dogs and best practices for both off-leash and leashed walks!
Essentials Every Dog Walker Should Have
Leashes: A variety of leashes is a must! Consider using standard leashes for control and retractable leashes for more freedom. (retractable are recommend but not my favorite)
Poop Bags: Always carry enough waste bags. In Canada, it’s not only courteous but also a legal requirement to clean up after your furry friends.
Water and Bowls: Hydration is key, especially during hot summer days. A collapsible water bowl is perfect for on-the-go hydration.
Treats: Keep some high-value treats handy for positive reinforcement and to reward good behaviour.
First Aid Kit: A basic first aid kit can be a lifesaver for minor injuries. Make sure to include items like antiseptic wipes, bandages, tweezers and something I just learned today from a fellow walker - Benadryl, even dogs can have reactions to bees or other environmental goodies in the outdoors!
Dog Identification: Ensure each dog has proper identification, including tags with your contact information, especially when walking in off-leash areas.

Managing Multiple Dogs
Walking multiple dogs can feel like a circus act but with the right approach, it can be a rewarding experience!
Choose Compatible Dogs: Always assess the personalities of the dogs you’re walking together. Pairing calm dogs with energetic ones can lead to chaos!
Use a Dog Walking Belt: My personal MUST have. A hands-free dog walking belt can help you manage leashes more efficiently, keeping your hands free for treats for the pups or yourself!
Practice Commands: Ensure all dogs know basic commands like "sit" and "stay." This can help maintain order during walks.
Keep a Steady Pace: Choose a pace that accommodates all dogs. A slower pace can help keep everyone together and reduce pulling.
Off-Leash vs. Leashed Walking
Deciding whether to walk dogs on-leash or off-leash depends on several factors including the environment, the dog's behavior and local regulations.
Off-Leash Walking
Know the Area: Familiarize yourself with local off-leash parks and their rules. In Canada, many parks have designated areas for off-leash play.
Assess Recall: Make sure each dog has a reliable recall before letting them off-leash. Practice this skill in a secure environment first. (A later topic)
Supervise Constantly: Keep a close eye on the dogs at all times. Off-leash doesn’t mean hands-off!
Leashed Walking
Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings. Leashed walks can be more predictable but still require vigilance, especially around other dogs or distractions.
Use Proper Gear: Harnesses can provide better control, especially for strong pullers. Invest in quality gear for safety and comfort. I love the ones with the front clip.
Teach Loose Leash Walking: Encourage dogs to walk beside you without pulling. This makes for a more enjoyable experience for everyone!
Best Practices for Dog Walking
Here are some additional best practices to ensure a smooth and enjoyable dog walking experience:
Be Respectful: Always respect other pedestrians and their space. Not everyone is a dog lover!
Stay Consistent: Consistency in routine helps dogs feel secure. Try to stick to regular walking times and routes.
Keep It Fun: Incorporate playtime and exploration into your walks. Dogs thrive on new experiences. LET them sniff!
Conclusion
Walking dogs is not just a job, it's a passion that brings joy to both the walker and the dogs. With the right tools and techniques, you can create a positive experience for every furry friend in your care. Remember, every walk is a chance to bond and explore, so enjoy every moment!
