It’s Heidi here from Barks & Parks and today I’m sharing something extra special—a list of 50 fun facts about dogs that are sure to make you smile, laugh and maybe even learn something new about our furry friends!   1. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell. It’s 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than humans. Your dog could probably sniff out that treat you’re hiding!

  2. Dogs can hear frequencies as high as 65,000 Hz. That’s about 8 times higher than humans can hear!

  3. Dogs' noses are wet for a reason. The moisture helps them capture scent particles in the air, making their sniffing even more effective!

  4. The Basenji dog is known for not barking. Instead, they make unique yodeling sounds, which is why they’re sometimes called "barkless dogs."

  5. Dogs dream, just like us. If you’ve ever seen your dog twitching or moving in their sleep, they’re probably dreaming about their adventures!

  6. Dogs can “smell” time. Studies have shown that dogs can sense the passage of time. They might not be able to read a clock, but they can sense when it’s time for their favorite activities like going for a walk or having dinner based on routine and smells.

    (My dogs go to the door around 3PM, waiting for the kids to come home!)

  7. Dogs have three eyelids. Two on the top and one on the bottom. The third eyelid is called the “nictitating membrane,” and it keeps the dog’s eyes moist and protected.

  8. A dog’s sense of hearing is 4 times better than a human’s. So, next time you’re worried your dog heard something, chances are, they did!

  9. Dogs sweat through their paws. Unlike humans who sweat from their skin, dogs cool down through the pads of their paws.

  10. A dog’s nose print is unique. Just like human fingerprints, no two dog noses are the same! - This was a WOW moment for me!

  12. The fastest dog breed is the Greyhound. Greyhounds can sprint up to 45 miles per hour. Whoa, talk about speed!

  13. The tallest dog ever recorded was a Great Dane. He stood an impressive 44 inches tall at the shoulder. His name was Zeus!

  14. Dogs have been human companions for over 15,000 years. They’ve been by our side for a long, long time!

  24. Dogs can see colors. While they see fewer colors than humans, dogs can distinguish shades of blue and yellow.

  25. The Border Collie is considered the smartest dog breed. They’re incredibly quick learners and excel at agility and obedience.

  26. Puppies are born blind, deaf, and toothless. They open their eyes and ears at around 2 weeks of age.

  27. Dogs can be right- or left-pawed. Just like humans are either right- or left-handed, dogs can have a dominant paw.

  28. Dogs have a “sixth sense.” Many owners believe their dogs can sense when something is about to happen, like thunderstorms or even an impending earthquake!

  29. Dogs’ tails communicate their feelings. A wagging tail doesn’t always mean happiness—dogs can also wag their tails when they’re anxious or agitated.

  37. The Greyhound is the only dog breed mentioned in the Bible.

  38. Some dogs are hypoallergenic. Breeds like the Poodle or Schnauzer are less likely to cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. Hence the Doodle craze!

  39. The Saint Bernard once worked as a rescue dog. They were used to help find people stranded in the Swiss Alps.

  40. Dogs can hear high-pitched sounds that humans can’t. They can even hear dog whistles, which humans can’t perceive at all.

  41. Dogs have been shown to help improve human health. Studies have shown that dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression and have lower blood pressure.

  42. A dog’s hearing is so sensitive that they can hear the sound of a heart beating from over 40 feet away.

  43. Boxers have unique “smiling” faces. This breed is known for its friendly and happy expression that makes them look like they’re always smiling.

  44. Dogs communicate through body language. They may not speak, but their posture, facial expressions and movements can say a lot!

  45. Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog breed in North America. These friendly and loyal dogs make great family pets.

  46. Dogs can’t digest chocolate. It contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Keep those treats out of reach!

  47. Dogs are the only species that can understand human gestures. They can follow pointing, eye contact and even hand signals.

  48. Pit Bulls are often unfairly labeled as aggressive. In reality, they are often friendly and loving when raised with positive reinforcement.

  49. Dogs can be trained to detect seizures. Many dogs can sense when their owners are about to have a seizure and provide assistance.

  50. Dogs have been featured in art for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians and Romans depicted dogs in their artwork and today they’re often featured in paintings, movies and commercials.
